Biography

Maureen Nyakoa is a member of the Board of Trustees and leads Campaign and Mobilization at CELSIR. She is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and the founder of Maureen Olonyi and Associates Advocates.

Her legal practice centers on criminal law, human rights, and alternative dispute resolution. She holds an LLB from Moi University, has pursued postgraduate legal study at the University of Nairobi, and is also a certified mediator.

Maureen has been at the forefront of advocacy for humane sentencing and the right to life of convicted persons, including appeals and resentencing matters that seek to replace death sentences and other harsh penalties with lawful and humane alternatives.

She is equally committed to the rehabilitation and transformation of incarcerated persons, and much of this work has been delivered on a pro bono basis for clients who could not otherwise access legal representation.
