Case Summary

Chebet was a pre-trial detainee in Kapsabet Women Prison when she first encountered CELSIR during Legal Aid Week. She was navigating multiple charges while also trying to care for her young daughter in custody.

CELSIR provided legal defense support, helped secure relief on some of the charges, and later assisted with tracing family and settling her daughter safely with Chebet’s sister when the child could no longer remain in prison.

The Challenge

Chebet’s case combined criminal defense needs with the realities of parenting in custody, cold prison conditions, and uncertainty about what would happen to her child.

CELSIR’s Response

CELSIR intervened through legal aid, challenged parts of the criminal case, and continued defending the more serious remaining charge.

At the same time, the organization responded to the child protection side of the story by tracing family and supporting safe placement outside prison.

How CELSIR Supported This Case

CELSIR responded to Chebet’s case through criminal defense, practical child support, and family tracing, recognizing that legal aid for women in custody must account for both due process and caregiving realities.

1. Respond during Legal Aid Week

CELSIR met Chebet in custody and quickly understood both the legal and child welfare urgency of the matter.

2. Defend the criminal case

The team helped remove some charges and continued defending the remaining arson count.

3. Plan for the child's safe transition

CELSIR traced family and helped settle Chebet’s daughter with her sister when prison care could no longer continue.

Context CELSIR response Impact

The case involved pre-trial detention, multiple charges, and the vulnerability of a child living in prison.

CELSIR delivered legal aid, practical child support, and family tracing instead of treating the matter as a narrow court file.

The story shows why legal aid for women in custody must account for caregiving, dignity, and child protection.

Outcome and Ongoing Impact

CELSIR helped secure relief on some of Chebet’s charges and continued legal defense on the remaining matter. The intervention also protected her daughter’s transition out of the prison environment.

The case highlights the need for legal aid that recognizes mothers, children, and the human consequences of detention beyond the charge sheet.
